Gardening Project update

A Gardening project update of news and requests from our PSA Vice-Chair Rachel

News:
1) The visit to Saheliya with 8 primary 6 girls was successful - the girls got to plant ginger root in pots, saw round the planned outside growing area for Saheliya, took part briefly in an end of year celebration and discussed the project with Saheliya's project leader - Pamela Couper.

2) The transplanting of peas with the 2 primary 5 classes went well on Friday 24 June.  Thanks to everyone who took part!

3) Two of us and one small child went to see Leith Walk Primary's Growing Area and discussed gardening in playgrounds, while some Leith Walk Primary School adults and children planted potatoes.  This also went well and we were lucky with the weather, on an otherwise very wet day!  Thanks for coming along Naomi.

Requests:
4) I should be generally around on the last 3 days of term and I would love some advice about some of the stray pots of growing things in the playground - some even need to be identified and also we should decide if they will / should last over the summer or should they be harvested / transplanted?

5) If anyone wants to do a little last minute gardening in the last few days of term they are welcome - we have a little more soil now (I bought some more on Monday, after we finished the last soil transplanting the peas on Friday).  I also tidied up a low planter in the top playground yesterday and its now got a couple of sunflowers and some mint in it.

6) It would be good to start thinking about the ideal harvest time for the crops, which will last over the summer, so that if it is august, we can get this into the school's diary quickly.

7) REMINDER: Don't forget the seed and soil event in the playground this afternoon, 2.45pm and 3.15pm, if you would like your child / children to pick up a seed to look after over the summer holidays.

8) Any other ideas or questions, please just let me know
